Trekking en Slovénie

zlatorogZlatorog is a legendary white chamois buck (steinbock, ibex, capricorn) who had his realm in the heights of Mount Triglav. The legend is well-known throughout Slovenia (specifically Slovenian Carinthia), as well as in Austrian Carinthia, and Italian Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Zlatorog had golden horns; the name means, literally, “Gold Horn” (zlata rog).

Zlatorog, attended by three virgins, guarded a treasure hidden in a mountaintop garden. Many men tried to kill Zlatorog in order to steal the treasure. One day a greedy hunter came to steal the treasure, stalked Zlatorog, and shot him. The injured Zlatorog’s blood ran for miles, carving out the mountains and lakes surrounding Triglav, the highest peak in the Julian Alps. At the scene, a lovely flower, the world’s first edelweiss according to legend, grew out of the soil and gave Zlatorog his life back.

Today Zlatorog is remembered as a brand of beer produced by Laško Brewery.
